The Story God Tells Us About Ourselves (1)

God asks us to listen to the story HE is telling about who we are, what we are like, and who we might become.

No matter what others may have said of us – or said to us – in the past, God asks us to listen to the story HE is telling us. Because this is the story that matters. This is the story that is true.

God is the I AM who enables us to say “I am.” (Exodus 3.1-4.17)

If we cannot say, “I am strong” when it is appropriate, how can we say “I am weak” when that is appropriate, or even “I am beloved”?

Fear says: I can’t handle this.

Faith says: I am a strong and confident person. I can handle this and do it well.

Fear says: This will annihilate me.

Faith says: Little by little, I will get through this. There is a life beyond this, a light beyond the wall. This does not have to destroy me.

Faith says:

I am more than the opinion others have of me. I am more than the stories that they tell about me. I am more than the limits they place upon me. I am more than their assessment of my potential.

I am more than any talent I may possess. I am more than any job I may have been given to do. I am more than how well I do the job.

I am more than my relationships.

I am more than any role I play.

I am more than the choices I have made. I am more than any mistakes I have made. I am more than my faults.

I am more than the worst thing I have ever done.

God says that I am enough in this moment, to serve the cause of love. Sufficient, in this moment, to offer amazing grace. Abundant, in this moment, as a bearer of eternal life.

Here and now, in this moment, I am God’s beloved. God’s grace is sufficient for me. And for those whose lives are touching mine.

The Story God Tells Us About Ourselves

We have come from God and we are going to God. Therefore we do not have to be afraid. We can live from love, not fear.

Above all, we do not need to worry about resources. God’s resources are infinite. They will never run out. God gifts us with abundance: enough for all, enough for each, enough for evermore. God has made us heirs of the promises. We can afford to share. We can afford to be generous. We have enough to do what we need to do today, and more will be given when we need it. We have enough to invest in God’s purposes. And we have enough to give.

God looks upon us only with love. God has faith in us. And so we can do what we need to do. And we can follow our dream.

This is the story God tells us about ourselves. The story God wants us to tell ourselves. The story God wants us to tell each other. The story God wants us to tell our children. The story God wants us to tell our neighbours. The story God wants us to tell the world.

When we hear this story, it is easier to know what we should be giving to others.
