Prayers: Loved and Known

1.

Let us remember that we meet in the presence of God who loves us:

Who knows us through and through,

better than we know ourselves,

better than we want to know ourselves sometimes.

Who knows our needs before we ask,

and who, knowing us, loves us

with a love that is rich and detailed,

intimate, yet more vast than we can imagine.

God knows us and loves us.

So here in God’s presence, we do not need to pretend

to be other than who we are, or how we are.

We do not need to be anxious, whether for ourselves or for others.

Here, above all, we do not need to be afraid…..

2.

O God of grace, you see us as we are,

you know the best and the worst of us.

Knowing us, you love us.

Knowing us, you reach out to us.

Knowing us, you receive us.

Knowing us, you welcome us.

Knowing us, you embrace us.

Knowing us, you invite us to receive.

You know our needs before we ask,

but as we ask, you release your life

and we who are weak and wilful, fallible and frail,

find ourselves bathed in your blessing.

3.

Living God, Sovereign of Creation,

holding all power and potential in your grasp:

you know all that we are;

yet you look upon us only with love.

You look upon me only with love.

Living Saviour Jesus,

giving your life to free us

from the forces which overwhelm us,

you know our story from the inside out;

yet you look upon us only with love.

You look upon me only with love.

Living Spirit, breath of our bodies

and dream in our hearts:

you know the heights of our longing

and the depths to which we fall;

yet you look upon us only with love.

You look upon me only with love.

Living God, Sovereign, Saviour, Spirit:

you call us to a time

when compassion, justice, mercy and peace

will rule the earth.

You know our failings as your people;

yet you look upon us only with love.

You look upon me only with love.

4.

O God of grace, you love me.

Knowing me through and through,

you love me.

Knowing me better than I know myself,

you love me.

Knowing my story from the inside out,

you love me.

Knowing the depths of my heart,

you love me.

Knowing all my thoughts and intentions, words and deeds,

you love me.

Even knowing all that you can never condone or approve,

you love me.

For this is the marvel and the mystery:

that you look upon me only with love.

You look upon me only with love.

4.

Within your love, I am held secure.

Here and now, I can be myself.

In this place, I can lay down all I am carrying,

say how it feels to be me,

bring to you all my anger, anxiety, bitterness and spite.

Within your love, I am understood.

Here and now, I am heard and appreciated.

In this place, I am refreshed and fed,

challenged and cleansed.

I can finish my long, rambling sentences;

work through my incoherent thoughts.

Within your love, I find healing and peace.

Given all I need, I am renewed in faith.

Helped to face my fears, I dream of being whole.

Knowing I am beloved, I offer all I value

into the shelter of the love that holds me,

learning to share your limitless life

with those whose lives touch mine.
