Works from Inside Out
Indications that the process begins with the inward and works from the inside out. (Mark 7.17-23; Sermon on the Mount).
The Gospels teach that Christian Spirituality works from the inside out: that faithfulness in outward expression, priorities and activity springs from the core of who we are, our "heart", our "mind", our "soul" or "strength"; that unless there is a strong coherence between how we see, imagine, think, believe, relate, choose and act, our outward practice will be at best hypocritical and at worst, destructive.
The ancient command, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might" (Deuteronomy 6.5) which Jesus affirmed as the first and greatest commandment of all, emphasises, through repetition, that we are called to love God with all we are from the very core and centre of our being, however we might describe it.
